"Firefly" by Indus (World Artist from the United Kingdom)

"Recorded live in studio, Indus' debut CD "Firefly" is an exhilarating mix of Eastern melodies and instrumentation performed with a jazz ensemble-like flair for spontaneity, improvisation and - not least, playfulness. Incorporating sitar, santoor (a 100-stringed instrument played with wooden mallets), Western flute and tabla, the 4-piece band stretches the boundaries of their Hindustani-inspired music in a musical exploration that's both rich in tradition as well as brilliantly modern. On CD-opener, "Mind the Gap," Indus' playfulness is in full evidence; a rhythmically complex piece that challenges each musician to stay true to the beat, it is an 11-minute workout of pure inspiration. "A Night at the Court" utilizes improvisational scat-like singing (called "bols," the language of tabla) over a regal melody reminiscent of classical Persian extemporization. In fact, the album's opus, "Esfahan," draws the neighboring cultures of India, Pakistan and Iran into sharp relief over the course of a wildly provocative 19-minute jam that gives each player more than ample space to improvise and experiment with melody, rhythm, tone and harmony. Equally challenging and rewarding, the evocative "Firefly" CD by Indus is perfect for fans of Indian music, or for listeners of similarly modern World Music visionaries (e.g., John McLaughlin's Shakti or Anouar Brahem).

"African Moments" by Kowa (World Artist from Germany)

This album is a re-mastered version of the 1996 release "African Moments" by Kowa, and includes 3 brand new tracks. The collection of songs, most in a relaxed style, is inspired by the culture and nature of sub-Saharan Africa. "Asumebele" starts off like any mellow, adult-contemporary song but soon evolves into something more as a chorus of male African singers joins the melody. "Africa" is an interesting and esoteric song which features African instruments used in a quasi-psychedelic manner. "Zulu Dance" is a mid-tempo number with interesting interplay between a steady beat and a flittering African-style flute. Throughout, though, intricate and accomplished guitar work and inspired vocals reveal the range and depths of this multi-talented group. This album is perfect for those who enjoy a good Easy Listening / World Music experience, particularly a melodic and reverent variant from Africa.

"Spirit In the Water" by Leni Stern (World Artist from New York(NY))

"Spirit In the Water" by Leni Stern is a World Beat album bringing the Western world the haunting melodies and rhythm driven music of Africa. Leni Stern's voice is haunting and beautiful, and holds her own over the large band playing along with her. 18 different people are credited with being a part of the recording, playing interesting instruments ranging from the shakers to the camala n'goni. She often switches lyrics between English and African dialects as you will hear in the song "Tell Me." Other songs seem to tell old African tales like "House of Thieves." If you're looking for something very different and very musical, you'll do well with the wonderful CD "Spirit In the Water."

"The Cosmic Dance" by Burning Truth (World Artist from Oregon(OR))

"The Cosmic Dance" by Burning Truth sounds like part of a full live experience. The music is made dynamic by the use of a number of different exotic instruments and is obviously meant to inspire dance. Many of these instruments (such as the didjeridu, tablas, and cuarto) can be heard on the title track "The Cosmic Dance" and "Journey Back to The Void." Most of the tracks, like "Gypsy Groove," feature haunting vocals from both male and female singers, but some are simply instrumental. While this music is obviously meant for the stage (they often have fire displays in their live show) "The Cosmic Dance" will still be enriching through your home speakers as well.

"I Stand Alone" by No Phear (Reggae Artost from New York(NY))

"I Stand Alone" by up and coming Reggae/Dancehall artist No Phear is very fitting for the modern, more urban turn that both the Reggae and Dancehall genres are making these days. This album makes use of fresh Hip-Hop beats while the artist raps in his native Jamaican dialect or patois. The deep and slow track "Mama Love" is inspired by the artist's mother and while it is very emotional, it sticks to the solid beats. "Da Wah Dah" is a very danceable dancehall track featuring artists Marlon and Pink Bling that will make the listener want to play it over and over again because of its catchy hook. "Eyez On Me" is another dancehall tune, reminiscent of Sean Paul, that makes an innovative use of voice machine effects over a progressive beat; it's impossible to not move at least one part of your body when this track on. The Reggae and Dancehall styles are transforming and this album is a prime, well-done example of that. Warning! This album contains Explicit Content.

RadioIndy is pleased to present E.D.Smooth with a GrIndie Award for the CD "True Reflection Of Love "

Chocked full of smooth energy, E.D.Smooth hits the music scene with another vibrant and pulsating Reggae album, "True Reflection of Love." Smooth's vocals are solid and radiate with an easy flowing style, which complement his impressive lyrics that are flooded with his life's experiences. An infectious opener, "This Is Your Moment" is quite effervescent with lively percussive beats, but what catches the ear is the charming lyrics dedicated to a birthday celebration. "All Night" brings out an easy groove as the soft and silky harmonies float over the relaxed and polished vocals. The syncopated rhythms swirl around Smooth's vocals on "Call And Talk To Me," while his lyrics are expressive and ring true to the heart. "Yesterday" by Martin Folly (Reggae Artist from France)

Martin Folly and his CD single, "Yesterday (Reggae Version)" proves his creativity as an artist as he does his own Reggae spin on this classic Beatle's song. The song kicks in with solid guitar chords, crisp cowbell, a strong bass line, and organ riffs that bring together a bouncy and lively beat. Folly's voice is rootsy, rich, and deep which gives this song an interesting and melodic tonality of Jamaican style. As an added bonus, check out his other song, a remake of Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back In Town." The tempo is slightly slower but Folly's Reggae beat and percussive drums really make the scene. There is also a terrific guitar solo swirling around syncopated rhythms giving a vibe of energy and enthusiasm. Fans of Reggae music will thoroughly appreciate these wonderful refreshing remakes.

"Far Away Land" by Panayotis Terzakis (World Artist from Greece)

Panayotis Terzakis' strong and powerful bass voice will impress you on the album "Far Away Land." This CD of traditional Greek/Folk music is taken to a new level with the well-trained bass vocals of Terzakis. He sings in the language of Greek and if you don't understand the language, you can still feel the poignant and emotive lyrics. He even harmonizes and doubles his vocals on many tracks such as "Ti Kako Kama O Kaimenos -album Version." You can hear the unique blend of Eastern and Western styles of music with " Perivolin Eixa Papia M'/arcadian Dance." Some tracks are A Cappella while others offer a timbre of an exotic array of instruments that all play well together, giving it the traditional Greek flavor. "Bewitched" by Raquy and the Cavemen (World Artist from New York(NY))

Raquy Danzinger has traveled the world and brought back with her the knowledge and skill to compose music with Middle Eastern and Egyptian tonality. "Bewitched," the latest release from Raquy and the Cavemen is a brilliant collection of these cultures and is filled with well crafted songs. This album features Dumbek (Arabic hand drum) and the Iranian Kamanche (an instrument comparable to the violin) creating traditional Middle Eastern music. The tone is very intense throughout the entire album. The Kamanche wails hauntingly over beaten drums on tracks like "Axarai" and the title track "Bewitched." Tracks such as "Metal" feature some virtuoso style drum rhythms and should not be missed. While this is sure to be a great live show, don't miss an opportunity to listen to "Bewitched" as it is an album well worth hearing as well.

"Samba de Fé" by Dorina (World Artist from Brazil)

The latest released album, "Samba de Fé" by talented Samba vocalist Dorina will get you off your feet and moving on the dance floor. Dorina sings with powerful strength and range over the syncopated rhythmic beats of the Samba groove. Some of the songs are fun, some sexy, but all use the classic Samba arsenal of percussive instruments, stand-up bass, and guitar. Many tracks like "Padroeira" use a small chorus to either produce a call-response in the vocals or just to enhance the main melody. Some of the tracks such as "Sonhava" are simply seductive with its suave beats and bouncy grooves. "Samba de Fé " is a spectacular album you can use from start to finish at an event to keep the party going.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Jerry Harris with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Mama Roots "

RadioIndy is pleased to present Jerry Harris with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Mama Roots "

With his deep, gruff, and oh-so-soulful voice, Jerry Harris's "Mama Roots" CD is a funky reggae album with roots as deep as the singer's own legacy. The prolific composer, a fixture in the NY reggae scene since the '70s, has once again delivered an album of potent rhythm and soul, a propulsive mix of Roots Reggae and Rocksteady that reflects the legion of key Jamaican talents he has worked with in 4 decades as a leading and important Reggae artist. Highlights include "Just a Little Love We Need" and the topical "Global Warming," both owing a debt to Bob Marley-influenced grooves, but on "Mama" he shines with a Jimmy Cliff-like pop sensibility that transcends mere reggae-style labels. On "Mama Roots" Harris is once again backed by a stellar rhythm section, typically concise guitar fills, affecting horn parts, and backing vocals from a female chorus that is integral and subtle. Lyrically, there is a '70's-centric affirmative and positive social relevance running through all his songs as he alternately exhorts, cajoles, and pleads for the kind of world that seemed nearer to realization in those more innocent times. Nevertheless, there is nothing out of date about either Jerry Harris' message or the timeless brand of reggae he so effortlessly puts forth. Jerry Harris' "Mama Roots" CD continues an ageless tradition of intoxicating Reggae/Rocksteady music.

RadioIndy is pleased to present K-Bass with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Too Much Negativity "

RadioIndy is pleased to present K-Bass with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Too Much Negativity "

K-Bass' splendid debut CD, "Too Much Negativity" is an exuberant and invigorating 11-track Reggae / Dancehall, bi-lingual feast of rhythm and melody cast in perfect harmony. Whether singing in French on the decidedly pop strains of "Union Africaine," or in English on the terrific Bob Marley-influenced title track, "Too Much Negativity," K-Bass strikes a balance between cultures that is accessible and profound in its cross-pollinations. The world-pop strains of "Douahode" provides a perfect example of this, featuring an incendiary surf-style guitar solo (reminiscent of Shakira) on a song with Middle Eastern tonalities, while the sing-along chorus of "Yuwa" reminds us that regardless of origins, great melodies cut across culture and ethnicity. Throughout, the band sparkles with stylized textural and dynamic flourishes as background choruses celebrate the inherent inclusiveness at the heart of Caribbean music. But whether it's Reggae, Dancehall, Afro-Beat, K-Bass' "Too Much Negativity" is world class: it's an upbeat, tuneful, completely danceable, and an engaging CD for the musically adventurous.

"Friction" by Pitchblack-ltd (Pop/Reggae Artist from Sweden)

Sweden's Pitchblack-ltd serves up their own vibrant take on dance-oriented rock on their terrific album, "Friction". Unlike some recently successful bands of this genre, the success of Pitchblack-ltd's new release is due more to an age-old reliance on brilliant song craft rather than mere adherence to the revival of the once unholy alliance between Rock and Disco. Indeed, each of the eleven songs on "Friction" bristles with its own immediacy, tunefully melding R&B and Rock influences with equal command. The first track, "Trouble Skank," establishes their unique sound with an insistent groove and sing-along melody. Elsewhere, "Everybodys Monkey" and "No Riot!?" employ the same measures of dance-floor urgency plus garage band vocal inflections, while the more relaxed "The Late Mans Blues," and the jazzy atmosphere of "Rumours," are testament to the band's adeptness with a broader – yet entirely cohesive, musical vision. Pitchblack-ltd's second CD "Friction" is an outstanding collection of razor-sharp songs executed with precision and muscle, regardless of style or influences.

"The Jungle or the Stars" by Ballistic Edna (Rock Artist from Illinois(IL))

Returning with "The Jungle or the Stars," an 11-song collection of smart and catchy, guitar-driven alternative pop/rock, the Chicago-based quartet, Ballistic Edna, delivers another CD that succeeds as both a follow-up and as a stand-alone album. "What Was That" opens the album with a power-chord manifesto that features a big, Bangles-like chorus as their two female singers blend voices with an ease that's extremely precise. Also recalling The Bangles, "Hallowed Ground" is a terrific rocker with a dead-on hook, while "Woman" thunders like a long-lost Heart out-take. Elsewhere, "Soulseeker" finds the band playing with Middle Eastern modalities without losing their fundamental rock ethos; experimentation not unlike the early-period of the group REM. Album closer, "Camera" in fact, takes the experimentation a step further, as the band explores an ambient mood that perhaps, suggests a new direction for the band. Kick back and enjoy their new CD, "The Jungle or the Stars" for straight-up, uncomplicated – Heartland-style Rock, as Ballistic Edna delivers the goods.

"En Magisk Hatt" starts things off right, wasting no time in acquainting listeners to the wide array of traditional instruments Lele Lele strategically orchestrates, as well as the vibrant and unique vocal performances. Taking on Middle-Eastern flair, "Zima" carries on the danceable mood of the CD while displaying some very memorable musical hooks. Furthermore, "Cogs & Gears" slows down the pace a bit while revealing a more emotional appeal to listeners. Off beat rhythmic patterns and chanted vocals give spirited grace to "Historyman Chant." "Blazing Jealousy" not only has strong and sincere vocals but the background harmonies add a touch of flavor. As reggae is mostly associated with drum patterns and strong bass lines, notice the incorporation of the strings on songs such as "Foolish Me" and "I Cry." Fans of Bob Marley won't want to miss hearing "Righteous Roots Reggae, Vol. 1" featuring strong vocals and reggae beats from the various male and female artists featured on this CD.

"True Reflection of Love" by E.D. Smooth (Reggae Artist from Jamaica)

"I Like It" is well-crafted and interesting with its percussive tones and smooth melody. You won't want to miss listening to the slick vocals of E.D. Smooth and his latest album, "True Reflection of Love," filled with distinctive treasures of charming and stylish Reggae compilations.
